WARRINGTON Rowing Club’s Lucy Glover once again performed beyond all expectations as she attended the GB Rowing Senior Trials.

The 18-year-old Lymm High School Sixth Form student was by far the youngest competitor to take to the water in Caversham but emerged having finished eighth against the country’s top 15 female scullers.

In an Open Women’s Singles field that included Olympic silver medallist Vicky Thornley, Glover came home seventh in the time trial.

That put her in a good position to qualify for the B final, but a top-three placing in her semi final would have got Glover into the more elite A final.

Glover could only manage fourth in the semi final, which was made even more agonising given that her time would have seen her finish third in the other semi final.

Lining up in the B final, Glover shot into an early lead but was eventually overtaken at the halfway mark by Agecroft’s Alice Baatz and finished second.

Glover’s performance means she is ranked second among the country’s under 23 female scullers and puts her in a good position to represent Great Britain at the World Under 23 Rowing Championships, which will be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in July.
