TWO of Warrington Athletics Club’s veterans secured regional titles on Sunday.

Dave Gill and Mervyn Ward travelled to Bispham for the Sweatshop 10-mile road race, which also incorporated the Northern Masters Championships.

Gill’s performance ensured he came home with medals in both events as he was the first over 55s athlete home in a time of 1hr 5mins 8secs to give him the Northern Masters title in his age group, which was also good enough for third place in the Firefighters Championships.

Ward stopped the clock in 1hr 6mins 32secs to finish second in the over 60s age group, which was enough to secure another Northern Masters title.

Further down the age spectrum, Warrington Athletics Club had 11 runners representing Cheshire in the Inter County Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Lauren Ferris posted the club’s highest finish of the day in Loughborough as she came 24th in the women’s under 17s race with a time of 21mins 29secs. Lauren Goddard came home 94th in the same age group.

Joe Buckley ran well to finish 25th in the boys’ under 15s event in 16mins 25secs, while clubmate Jordan Jones was nine seconds behind him to finish 32nd.

In her first race for Cheshire, Orla Gregory came home 154th in the girls’ under 13s race, while India Hayes was 170th in the girls’ under 15s category.

Warrington had three runners in the men’s under 17s race, with Jack Stubbings finishing 85th, Sam Rostron close behind in 97th and Luke Gamble completed the club’s representation by coming home in 183rd place.
