WARRINGTON Sports Club’s men’s first team have culminated a remarkable season by securing the North West Counties Squash League title with games still to play.

A 20-9 home win over Wigan Squash was enough to clinch their first Division One crown in 17 years and maintain their unbeaten record this season.

They were presented with the trophy by league chairman Bernie Gill before Tuesday’s home game against Southport and Birkdale.

The team have won 16 and drawn two of their 18 games so far this season and, with the end of the campaign looming large, club chairman Richard Bradbury says the team are determined to maintain their unblemished record.

“Don’t be fooled by the scoreline, there have been some very competitive matches played,” he said.

“Having won the league, the focus is now on remaining unbeaten.”

The team blends youth with experience, with captain Andy Whipp recently crowned British champion in the over 35s age group.

At the other end of the scale, 17-year-old former Lancashire junior champion Charlie Major also turns out for the team, as does 16-year-old Nat Fairhurst, the current Merseyside Open and Closed champion for his age.

The club currently runs eight men’s teams in the North West Counties League, while two women’s teams compete in the Cheshire Ladies League.
