Millom 10 Crosfields 34

CROSFIELDS got their return to Division Two of the National Conference League off to the perfect start with an impressive away victory.

An opening day test against Cumbrian side Millom, who were relegated from Division One last year, was a tough assignment but Soap came through with flying colours.

Skipper Jack Reid led the way with a 14-point personal haul which included a try, four conversions and a penalty as his side gave new head coach Mark Brennan the perfect start to life at the club.

Soap took control of the game early, with debutant Scott Cullen crashing over between the sticks for the first try after just two minutes before a sweeping move saw Keiron Thomas score in the left corner.

The hosts rallied and crossed for their first try midway through the half, with Soap’s defence having to work overtime to stop the Millom attack for the rest of the half.

However, Dan Reid was able to touch down John Whittaker’s kick on the hooter for Crosfields to give them more comfort going into the interval.

Millom scored their second try shortly after the break, but that was as good as it got for the hosts as Brennan’s side were able to widen the margin of victory.

Joe Moore got the first of his two tries as he took four defenders over the line with him before skipper Reid dummied his way over to all but seal the win.

Reid added a penalty to give Crosfields further control and there was still time for Moore to hit a great line to double his tally.

Soap return to Hood Lane for their first home game of the new season on Saturday as they host Salford City Roosters, kick off 2.30pm.
