Firwood Waterloo 31 Lymm 12

LYMM’S fight “went missing” on Saturday as they fell to their third straight defeat at relegation-threatened Firwood Waterloo, according to coach Adam Fletcher.

A much-changed visiting side could not recover from a poor opening to the game, with Luke Titherington and Tim Oakes scoring their tries.

“It would be easy to blame the crippling injury list or the ref's lack of experience but we still had enough quality to beat a side second from bottom,” Fletcher said.

“Credit to them, they are in a dogfight and came out fighting. Unfortunately, our fight went missing.

“On the plus side, the offloading game is starting to come back and we created numerous chances.

"The Titherington brothers, who are17 and 18 years old, are improving each week and at this rate are going to be great players.

“The boys are battered and bruised but still have the desire to finish the season off in style."

Jonny Cunnningham’s try, converted by Liam Reeve, gave the hosts an early lead before fly-half Reeve booted them further clear with a penalty.

Then, after Lymm seemed certain to cut the gap with their opening try, the ball came loose and Firwood winger Jacob Allen raced 90 metres to score between the posts.

Titherington crossed for a well-worked try converted by Cormac Nolan to put Lymm on the board, but another Reeve penalty ensured the hosts scored the final points of the first half.

Reeve booted another penalty to extend the advantage before Oates scored out wide from a driving maul for Lymm.

Sadly, it was not the catalyst for a revival as Jack Weare scored Firwood’s third try before another Reeve penalty secured their victory.

Lymm now sit eighth in the National League Three North table and are not in action this weekend.

Their next game comes on Saturday, March 4, when they welcome league leaders Huddersfield, who have won all 20 of their league games this season, to Beechwood.

Lymm: Dan Horton, Tim Oakes, Mike Auden, Joe Watson, Zak Lythgoe, Jake Ashall, Ali Sutherland, Adam Bray; Tom Shard, Will Titherington; Joe Denman, Oli Higginson, Lucas Titherington, Richard McEvoy, Cormac Nolan. Subs: Rhys Jones, Will Baldwin, Matthew Connelly.

Wilmslow 2nd 34 Lymm 2nd 15

LYMM’S seconds could not make their first-half dominance pay as their perfect start to the Cotton Traders Conference B League season ended on Saturday.

The visitors controlled proceedings early on but good Wilmslow defence kept out constant waves of pressure and they kicked a penalty to take the lead.

Lymm’s pressure eventually told when the ball was worked wide for Jorge Reynolds to cross, but that was the only time they managed to score in a first half they dominated.

Wilmslow were able to score three quick tries after the break and it proved to be enough to win the game despite Lymm crossing twice more through Jack Pilkington and Ollie Ashall.
