ATHLETICS and running clubs in Warrington have come together to create a new road-race series for the town.

A resurgence in running over the past few years has seen hundreds of newcomers taking to the track, road and countryside to participate in events organised by clubs.

And with entries for events having climbed to unprecedented levels, five clubs have formed the Warrington Road Race Grand Prix series.

Each club have nominated a race from their calendar to be their contribution to the overall series, with the results from all five races leading to trophies and prizes for each male and female overall winner as well as awards for the veteran category victors.

The nominated 2017 races are:

* Burtonwood 5 miles, March 25, organised by Warrington Running Club

* Peter Lowe Memorial (Hollins Green) 5k, June 17, organised by Spectrum Striders

* Warrington 10k, June 29, organised by Warrington Road Runners

* Lymm Festival Trail 10k, July 9, organised by Lymm Running Club

* Olympians (Victoria Park and Kingsway Bridge) 8 miler, September, to be organised by Warrington Athletics Club

More than 1,000 runners are expected to enter the series.
