AS the new year creeps ever closer, we have reached the top five in our countdown of the town's top sporting moments for 2016.

Today's entry comes from the unforgettable Olympic Games in Rio, made more memorable by some medal wins for two of our Warrington connections

5. OLYMPICS: Silver lining for duo:

JAMES Guy’s time in Warrington may have been brief during his childhood, but the swimmer left a mark by winning the Warrington Guardian’s Under 11 Sports Personality of the Year award in 2007.

Fast forward to August and Guy realised his potential in the pool by forming part of the 4x200m freestyle team that scooped a silver medal for Great Britain.

In fact, Guy swam his anchor leg alongside American great Michael Phelps and clocked a time that was 0.4secs quicker than the 23-time gold medallist.

The Paralympics also brought medals as well, with Woolston resident John Stubbs MBE teaming up with Jodie Grinham to win silver in the mixed team open compound archery event in Rio.
