Macclesfield Thirds 27 Warrington Seconds 12

A POOR first half proved costly for Warrington’s seconds as they went down to defeat at Macclesfield.

Two interception tries, both converted, got Macclesfield off to a flying start before a penalty meant they were 17-0 down at half-time.

Another try for the hosts stretched that lead by five points and, despite Warrington responding strongly through tries from Will Maudsley and John McGill, they had the final word by crossing for another five-point score.

“Obviously, we gave away too many points too early in the game and we had to play catch-up rugby throughout,” player/coach Shaun McDermott said.

“But we are still sixth in the league and the way the lads are playing it can only get better.”

Warrington Thirds 24 Bowdon Seconds 5

WARRINGTON belied their position at the bottom of the league as they swept aside a Bowdon side six places above them.

Mark Tickle crossed for two first-half tries to give his side a 10-0 lead at the break before Bowdon responded with their only points through a driving maul try.

However, Warrington held their nerve and Olly Giles powered over after running from his own half before Jamie Thompson’s chip was collected by half-back partner Dan Reid, who crossed to round off the scoring.

Skipper Tony Fretwell commented: “Today we were lucky enough to have a backbone of real experience to support the enthusiasm of the young lads and this combination proved unstoppable.”
