Lymm 24 Wirral 27

LYMM failed to take advantage of being in a commanding position at Beechwood as Wirral ensured their frustrating period continued.

Adam Fletcher's side raced into a 17-0 lead and were 24-13 up with time running out, but the visitors rebounded to inflict a second defeat on the bounce upon the hosts.

Lymm, sitting ninth in the National League Three North table, now face a trip over the Pennines to face Ilkley on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.

Keen to put last week's defeat to league leaders Huddersfield behind them, the hosts flew out of the traps and took an early lead when Richard McEvoy burst through to score between the posts, leaving Tom Shard with an easy conversion.

Shard slotted over a penalty to give his side a 10-0 lead after just seven minutes before Wirral's left winger was sent to the sin bin.

Lymm smelt blood and, when the visitors were forced to illegally wheel a five-metre scrum, a penalty try was awarded and Shard duly converted for a 17-0 lead.

Back to a full compliment of players, Wirral got themselves on the scoreboard through a penalty before notching their first try of the game to reduce the deficit to seven points at the break.

The visitors were growing in confidence and added another penalty, but Lymm hit back when Shard's kick bounced kindly for Ollie Higginson to collect and sprint over from 25 metres, with the conversion stretching the lead to 11 points.

However, Wirral were not finished as they broke through the middle to haul Lymm back to within a score of the lead.

They then edged ahead for the first time when a quick tap penalty led to them diving over the line.

Lymm pressed in the final stages to try and force at least a draw, but the visitors held out.

Lymm Junior Colts 30 Caldy Junior Colts 0

LYMM'S Junior Colts put in a much-improved performance to keep their Caldy counterparts off the scoresheet on Sunday.

Following their last-gasp defeat to Bowdon in their opening game last week, Lymm faced the tough prospect of a Caldy side who won their season opener but they rose to the task admirably.

Their energy in the forwards and solid defence allowed them to run in four tries and record a comfortable victory.

Lymm: Buckley, Ratcliffe, Vickery, Grogan, Caldwell; Hughes, Boydell; Lilly, Nikou, Ure, Murphy, Whitehead, Taylor, Llewlleyn, Sherlock. Subs: Holmes, Foster, Mullarkey, Simmons.

Meanwhile, Gethin Williams and Korben Ince starred for Lymm's unders 7s in their round-robin tournament at Macclesfield, but the whole team won praise for their effort.
