CHESHIRE Wire’s under 14s Green squad suffered an agonising defeat in their clash with second-placed Oldham Eagles on Sunday.

The hosts sat behind their guests in the table before tip off having played a game less, but kept up their 100 per cent start to the season with a narrow 63-62 win.

Wire had a free throw to tie the game in the dying seconds, but it was missed and they fell to defeat and conceded top spot.

It was a true test of their mettle as both sides endured 10-point deficits at some point in a topsy-turvy encounter.

Oldham worked hard and showed plenty of endeavour, but Cheshire also displayed a fantastic work ethic to keep control of the game.

Matt Dalton and Mike Whitlow were particularly impressive in defence, covering the floor to prevent a number of fast break initiatives deployed by Oldham.

The hosts led by two points with five seconds to go, but with one second left on the clock Wire were awarded two free throws.

The first was converted, but the second missed before time ran out to convert the rebound.

The team returns to Birchwood Leisure Complex on Sunday when they host Lancashire Spinners Rossendale, 4pm start.

The Spinners are currently bottom of the Under 14 North West Regional League I after losing all three of their games so far.

Wires’ Under 14s White squad are also at home earlier on Sunday, taking on Manchester Magic II at 10am.
