Rylands 4 Avon Athletic 1

MANAGER Darren Davies said Rylands showed flashes at what they are capable of as they progressed to the last-16 of the Guardian Cup on Saturday.

Ryan Wan and Michael Sullivan both scored twice as the Blues dominated Avon, who ply their trade in the Premier Division of the Warrington and District Football League, at Gorsey Lane.

Davies said after the game that Sullivan’s second goal, a superb overhead effort, was “one of the best goals you’ll see this season.”

“We defended well mostly and it’s good to make it back-to-back wins at home for the first time this season,” he said.

“We dominated the game for the majority and showed snippets of what this team may be capable of long term.

“I thought Jon Dawson, Keddie and Lee Roberts linked up really well at times and Sully scored one of the best goals you’ll see all season.”

The hosts finally took the lead just after the half-hour when Dawson’s corner was headed down by Jordan Rigby for Wan to poke home.

The goal led to a period of sustained pressure from the hosts, culminating in a devasting counter-attack and Sullivan calmly slotting home the second goal.

After the break, Wan was able to double his tally when another excellent team move allowed him to smash home from the edge of the area.

The best was yet to come, however, and Sullivan got his second goal in terrific style when he controlled Keddie’s pass on his chest before unleashing an overhead kick into the corner from inside the area.

Avon did have the last laugh however after Stephen Latham handled a shot on the line. He was sent off and the penalty was converted but Rylands were worthy victors.
