JAKE Hibbert has become the youngest winner of a prestigious trophy.

The teenager from Appleton clinched the Warrington Golf Club Championship Trophy 10 days short of his 15th birthday.

Hibbert, whose handicap dropped from 3 to 1 as a result of the success, finished clear of a hunting pack by two shots.

His excellent score of 68 put him in a commanding position after a first round that included a hole-in-one at the 16th by Chris Bate, but Hibbert was still fighting for the lead in an exciting finish.

Hibbert, a student at Bridgewater High School, was in the final group four shots ahead of the field, alongside Brad Read and Ben Wallis.

He struggled to protect his lead and after encountering a gorse bush on the 17th, where he finished with a seven, Wallis came to the 18th hole with Hibbert’s lead whittled down to one shot.

This was ahead of his two playing partners, and also Guy Hindle who had finished with an excellent second-round score of 69.

All three players in the final group hit their drives on the 18th to the left, and both Read and Wallis missed the green with their second shots.

With great skill Hibbert, who has been a member of the club for five years, hit a controlled fade round trees onto the 18th green.

And then he calmly holed a birdie putt to win the trophy by two clear shots.

His score of 68+75=143 put him ahead of Hindle with 145 and Ben Wallis, who just edged out Brad Read, both with 146.

A highlight of round two was the score of 67 by Carl Briggs which included seven birdies.
