LEIGH Golf Club are celebrating once more after their ladies team booked a place at a major final on the continent.

The team representing the Culcheth club came through nine rounds of competition in the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.

They will now travel to Spain to compete in the finals at the El Rompido course in Andalucia.

After receiving a bye through the first round, the seven-strong team came through away ties at Ashton-in-Makerfield and Shore Hill with 3-2 victories in both matches.

A 3.5-1.5 home win over Alsager followed before another home tie saw them edge out Ringway 3-2 in Round Five.

They hit form in the next two rounds to thrash Formby and Ulverston before a tight 3-2 home win over Llanymynech set up a trip to Howley Hall.

The team came through that tie 3-2 to book their place in Spain.

Team Captain Mhairi Ferrol, Nikki Martin, Rachel Higson, Heather Pirrie, Joanne Lennox Warburton, Penny Moorfield and Tracey Sherwood all contributed to this success over the nine rounds.

Ferrol commented: “The incredible team spirit and camaraderie has got us to this point. Who knows what we can achieve whilst in Spain.”

The ladies’ success is another reason for the club to celebrate after their men’s team lifted the prestigious Dunham Forest trophy for the fifth time in seven years last month.
