RYLANDS emerged victorious in a pulsating North West Counties Youth Cup Final against their neighbours that required extra time on Sunday.

In glorious sunshine at Thatto Heath, Sharks took just two minutes to take the lead when Brad McAlpine crashed over.

He then added a second before Rovers got themselves on the board through tries from Josh Bray and Callum Hinton both crossed to narrow the gap to two points.

Elliot Best burrowed over from dummy-half to give Rylands an eight-point half-time lead, but Daniel Farrell hit back for Rovers just after the break.

Bray then raced down the touchline to give them the lead for the first time.

Rylands weren’t behind for long, and Bruce Martinus barged over next to the posts after a spell of pressure on Rovers’ line.

However Woolston then swept the ball along the line for Farrell to score his second, levelling the scores in the last minute of normal time.

Hinton’s kick, which would have clinched victory, drifted agonisingly wide.

Patryk Mazur sprinted home from 70 metres at the start of extra time, giving Rovers the lead before Sharks substitute Callum Hewitt crossed for a converted try to snatch it back.

Hewitt added an exclamation point with the last play of the game as Rylands won a thrilling contest.
