GOLFERS from Warrington are proving to be masters of the biggest inter-club competition of its kind in the country.

A team from Leigh Golf Club, based in Twiss Green, Culcheth, lifted the Dunham Forest Trophy for the fifth time in seven years on Saturday.

And the defending champions extended the competition record to six victories in emphatic style, conceding the last two matches in the final after taking a 5-0 lead against Rossendale.

They reached finals day the hard way.

Club officials say it makes this year’s success extra special that they played away from home in every round.

The team, compiled of club head professional Andrew Baguley, Callum Blinkhorn, Chris Harrison, Stuart Harrison, Stu Tinsley, Andy Collier, Dan Crook and Paul Sherwood (reserve), saw off Fairfield 5-2 in Saturday morning’s semi final at Dunham Forest Golf Club in Altrincham, while Rossendale progressed by overcoming Dukinfield 4½-2½.

Leigh showed their class in the final as they dominated the games.

Wins from Stuart Harrison by 5/4 over Iain Hackett, Tinsley two-up against Chris Nicholls, Collier 4/3 over Dan Redding and Chris Harrison by 2/1 over Danny Leigh put them in an unassailable position.

Blinkhorn added a 4/2 win over Sean Doherty before Crook and Baguley conceded their matches.

This year’s edition of the Manchester and District Golf Alliance’s top inter-club knockout competition started out with an entry of more than 90 teams.
