GLAZEBURY fell to defeat in their final home game of 2016 as Tranmere Victoria secured a five-wicket victory on Saturday.

Batting first after losing the toss at Hurst Lane, Glazebury slipped to 1-2 after a disastrous start and that set the tone for the hosts’ inninings as only two batsmen made it to double figures.

One of those was Ian Black, who resisted gallantly and anchored the innings with a knock of 73 but he didn’t receive much support from his colleagues.

Despite Black’s effort, Glazebury were dismissed for just 122 to leave their bowlers with work to do.

An opening stand of 55 set the platform for the visitors in reply but Tom Wilkinson led a mini-fightback with 3-24.

However, it didn’t put Tranmere off their stride and they reached their target in just under 28 overs.

Glazebury finish their season on Saturday with a trip to Pott Shrigley.

The club’s seconds were also beaten on Saturday as high-flying Rostherne completed a crushing, 156-run home victory.

Bowling first, the visitors’ bowling attack could not cope with Rostherne’s powerful batting line-up and they were able to declare on 230-3, with wickets coming for David Nicholson, Frank Pedigrew and Bruce Jardine.

In reply, Glazebury never threatened the hosts’ total and they were dismissed for 74, with Phil McCue carrying his bat on 53.

They welcome Frodsham to Hurst Lane for their final game of the season on Saturday.
