JAMES Guy said he was left “devastated” after contesting the Olympic Games 400m freestyle final in Rio this morning.

The former pupil of Our Ladys Catholic Primary School and Cardinal Newman High School missed out on a medal by 16 hundredths of a second at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Barra Da Tijuca.

World champion Guy, in his maiden Olympics, finished fourth after clocking a time only 0.3 seconds outside of his personal best.

After making flying starts in previous races and being reeled in, the 20-year-old attempted to control his opening 100m better and the tactics came within a whisker of paying off for the Warrington Under 11s Sports Personality of 2007 award winner.

“I tried to control the first 100m from what I’d done yesterday and unluckily I just came fourth, which is quite devastating,” he told the BBC.

It was Guy’s second final of the Games, having finished sixth in the 400m freestyle showdown.

“The Games hasn’t been a perfect ride but hey, I’m 20, I’m enjoying the meet, I’ve come fourth, and if someone said to me four weeks ago I’d make two Olympic finals I would have took it. I think I’ve done okay.”

His Games are not over yet, as will return to the pool with the 4x200m team.

“I’ll give it everything I’ve got for Team G at home and my family as well,” he said.

Team GB will be in the second heat of the 4x200m relay at 6.29pm tonight, Tuesday.
