JAMES Chester’s dream of a place in the European Championships 2016 final in Paris on Sunday is over.

And the 27-year-old Warringtonian can thank two of his former Manchester United clubmates for that.

Chester, a former student at Birchwood Community High School, bowed out of the competition with Wales last night in a 2-0 loss to Portugal in Lyon, France.

The winning goals came in a three-minute spell in the second half from Cristiano Ronaldo (50mins) and Nani (53mins) who were both first-team regulars at Old Trafford when Chester was attempting to break into the ranks.

Central defender Chester, now at West Bromwich Albion, was beaten in the air by Ronaldo for the opener from a corner.

And it was from Chester’s headed clearance out of the box that Ronaldo’s shot was deflected home with an outstretched leg by Nani.

While Portugal progress to the decider, where they will face hosts France or Germany after tonight’s second semi final, Chester and his Wales teammates can prepare for home with heads held high.

A hero’s welcome awaits Chris Coleman’s men in what will be another incredible experience for ex-Hull City 2014 FA Cup finalist Chester, who started his football career with Winwick Athletic as a five-year-old.

Wales' semi-final appearance is their best effort in an international football tournament and Chester will always be able to reflect on that achievement with the country of his mother's birth.
