TONY Rough visited the small but productive River Alyn at Rossett where he snatched a brief two-hour session.

Trotting down a small loafer float and loose-feeding maggots with a single on the hook, he had a bite almost every run down the swim which was full of brown trout. Nothing large, but good sport with fish up to 12ozs plus a few bonus grayling and dace. All fish were in fin perfect condition.

Tim Slough spent a few hours at High Legh Fisheries on Monday when, in between downpours, he caught five cracking mirror carp between 3½ to 4½lbs using a pellet feeder with spicy krill Bandums pellet. He fed hemp and pellets over the top.

This pocket-sized fishery may not be the home of 20s but those small carp punch well above their weight.

The fishery needs a bit of attention, mainly trimming back overhanging bushes and grass cutting so if anybody fancies helping out on a working party starting at 8am tomorrow, Friday, you will be more than welcome.

Another seal has been reported on the Mersey trapped between the two weirs of Woolston and Latchford, where it is happily decimating our fish brood stocks. I have reported its presence to the Environment Agency because unfortunately with not being estuary or open river the fish have limited chance of escape.

The small fish are the least affected because it is too much effort for the animal and Mersey devotee Ade Green proved this in a session on Kingsway allotments on Tuesday when fishing the pole and alternating between maggot and caster he caught 60 roach but nothing over 4ozs.

We are hopeful of enlisting the help of members as we try to establish the usage of our river fisheries.

Any visits you make, please log them along with catch results and let us know.

We have no issues with landowners or farmers with the exception of our upper stretch on the Wye where I would ask members to be polite but report any issues.

Good news on our Ribble stretch is that thanks to the unprecedented thoughtfulness of Joe Myers – the owner of Trough House Farm – Warrington Anglers' Association along with Prince Albert have now completed the joint purchase of our own car park. It requires fencing and stoning so not yet ready for use but it is in hand. Jim Wilcock enjoyed a short day session on Appleton Reservoir at the weekend and was rewarded with four carp up to mid-doubles on boilie and corn.

He reckons that this fishery, along with The Mount at Buckley, have vastly improved due to our stocking policy.

It is nice to be appreciated, unlike the scum who left a bag of litter that Jim – as a caring member – took home for disposal.

As an aside, thanks to a member's vigilence the committee handed out a three-month ban to an angler for leaving a credit-card receipt and chocolate wrappers behind his peg. He was lucky not to receive a life ban.

In a blast from the past, Martin Kettle showed he hadn't forgotten all those lessons gleaned from when he was one of our young stars fishing in our junior and national events by winning our Saturday Mersey Series using the whip and maggot. Martin put 6lbs 8ozs 0drs of roach and perch on the scales. Alan Birchall was second with 5lbs. Derek Bibby won our Sunday Series event with 9-2-0 of skimmers, roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Just to illustrate that this river is definitely not a single-method water Dave Hill fished the stick-float and maggot for 7-14-0.

So in two days the whip, feeder and stick methods framed – anyone want to try bolognaise, waggler or slider to complete the set?

Phil Cross weighed in 5-14-0 of small roach and skimmers in our Disabled and Over 60s match on Monday to push Jimmy Byrne into second place.

Fished on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Billinge, both anglers on adjacent pegs went fish for fish throughout the match but Jimmy ended up with 5-8-0 and runner-up spot.

Weights were down at our Woodshaw Junior Summer League on Monday which was won by Tyler Davies on pole-fished maggot and caster with a weight of 8-5-0.

Bites were scarce on other pegs and Andrew Carman needed only 2-2-0 for second place.

This weekly series is open to all junior members.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open every Friday between 7pm and 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries.

Your catch reports are always welcome, email details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or call 01928 716238.
