WARRINGTON Rowing Club returned from the National Schools Regatta over the weekend laden with medals of all colours as several crews pitted their wits against the best in the UK.

The club returned from Eton Dorney Lake, the venue for the London 2012 rowing events, with four medals including two golds.

Lucy Glover scooped two golds after she won the girls Championship single scull before joining Lucy Stanhope, Ellie Davies and Pippa Curran to win the Championship Quads and all-but seal their place at the famous Henley Regatta.

Further quads success came from the development crew made up of Becky Marsh, Cam Nyland, Abbie Ellam and Dom Billingham, who won an impressive silver medal, and the bronze-winning boys under 16s team of Tom Carroll, Connor Guerin, Al Eaves and Matt Baguley.

All the races were run over the Olympic distance of 2000m, meaning the juniors got some valuable experience of full-distance racing.

Glover beat off 40 other entrants to win the single scull in fine style, controlling her heat from start to finish before winning her semi-final by a huge margin to set up an appearance in the final.

She arguably saved her best for last by romping home to claim the gold medal and the International Cup with it, but that wasn’t the end of her action.

She joined her quads teammates and started with a time trial in which they came third, finishing behind strong crews from Moseley and Glasgow but ahead of rivals Shiplake Vikings.

This secured the girls a good lane draw for the semi-final against Glasgow and they pulled out a big lead which edged the Scottish crew out into second place by less than a second.

Again, this mean the Warrington girls were drawn in the best lane for the final and they shot out of the blocks to pull out a big lead at the 1500m mark.

The rest of the field closed the gap, but the girls held on to claim a superb gold medal and put themselves in with a strong chance of claiming a spot at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.

The development race was a new event for second boats behind the premier Championship event and the Warrington crew surpassed their own expectations by winning silver behind a strong Nottingham crew.

The junior under 16 boys quad rounded off the weekend by pinching a bronze medal as they took on the 26 best crews in the UK.

Other notable results included Dan Lee, who finished a creditable 19th out of 50 in the Championship Sculls, and the boys junior under 15 quad, who finished in ninth place.
