ONE Warrington resident is set to play a key part in Great Britain’s push for success at the Olympic Games in Rio this summer.

While Lee Herrington may not be going for gold on the track, in the swimming pool or on the rowing lake, his role in the physiotherapy team will prove crucial when the Team GB athletes aim for medals in Brazil.

Doncaster-born Dr Herrington, a senior lecturer in Sports Rehabilitation at Salford University, has lived in Warrington for 30 years.

However his home for much of the summer will be Brazil, where he will be responsible for the health and wellbeing of Britain’s athletes .

He will be working alongside the likes of Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford making sure they are physically and mentally ready to take on their rivals.

And it won’t be the first time Dr Herrington has done the job.

He worked with athletes at London 2012 as well as at the European Games in Azerbaijan last year, and says he is looking forward to being there for “the craziest show on earth.”

“It is a great privilege and honour to be able to play my part in the success of Team GB in Rio, and when I get to see our athletes on the podium collecting their medals I will be immensely proud,” he said.

“The journey the youngest members of the team will make during the tournament will be fascinating to observe.

“Having worked with Team GB before, there’s a real togetherness amongst the group and it’s always nice to see the more experienced athletes passing on their know-how and advice to the team’s newest additions.

“The Olympics is the craziest show on earth, and I can’t wait to get started!”
