WARRINGTON Athletics Club star Carys McAulay stormed to a Northern Indoor Championships senior gold medal on Sunday.

Despite not being 100 per cent fit, the teenager topped the 800m podium at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield after winning the final in 2mins 11.72secs.

Under 20s runner McAulay, who competed at the Commonwealth and World Youth Games last summer, won her heat before turning on the burners with 75 metres remaining in the final to take victory from third place.

There were other medals for Warrington too. Melissa Boyer scooped a silver in the 1500m while Fisayo Williamson-Taylor earned a 60m bronze.

Boyer clocked 5mins 06.03secs in the women’s 1500m, while under 17s sprinter Williamson-Taylor worked his way through two heats before running 7.23secs in the final.

The teenager was also in action in the 200m, where he finished second and third in the heats before a race of 24.16secs secured fifth spot in the final.

Cameron Meakin qualified for the men’s under 20s 60m hurdles final with a third-place finish in the heats, eventually finishing sixth in 8.78secs.

Meakin was also in action in the under 20s 60m, but failed to progress from the semi finals.

Meanwhile, Warrington Athletics Club’s under 11s runners competed in the fourth round of the Manchester Area Cross Country League at Heaton Park on Saturday.

In the girls’ race, Molly Wormald led the A team home in seventh place in 13mins 06secs, with Eva Ferris coming 13th and Maisie Bell 14th, 13mins 37secs and 13mins 43secs respectively, as the team finished third.

The B team of Lucie Davies, 33rd in 14mins 48secs, Lily Briscoe, 35th in 15mins 08secs, and Shauna Clarke, 45th in 16mins 23secs, placed 10th in the team event.

In the boys’ race, Rhys Hopkins was 12th place in 12mins 34secs to lead the team home and was backed up by Reece Connell, 15thrthr in 12mins 43secs, and Finlay Smith, 29th in 14mins 26secs, for fifth overall.
