WOOLSTON Rovers hope to boost the club's junior ranks and encourage youngsters in Warrington to take up rugby league with a new scheme that will see them sending coaches into schools.

A pilot version, at Woolston C of E School, will run for four weeks with the club intending to roll the plan out across more schools should it prove successful.

The scheme is supported by Super League side Warrington Wolves.

Rovers' coaching co-ordinator, Mark Robinson, said: “This is a very exciting development for us as a club.

"We have worked really closely with Warrington Wolves, especially Phil Jones and Lee Mitchell, and they have been very supportive and given us some fantastic advice that we are very grateful for.

"We are a very forward-thinking club and we feel that this is the next step for us to take to expand our brand into the local schools and community."

The club also hope to provide an Easter camp for youngsters.

"Our aim, as well as increasing the number of youngsters playing in the green and gold, is to get more local people interested in the game and wanting to go along to The Halliwell Jones Stadium and support the Wolves, " added Robinson.

The club has achieved the prestigious Player Development Club Accreditation.

"This is something that the club are delighted to receive and they will continue to ensure that the Embed the Pathway is the framework that we deliver to all of our young players," said club spokesman Dave Whalley.

Meanwhile, the club will hold an evening's entertainment at Monks Sports Club on February 5 in memory of John Earle, who died in Brisbane, Australia last year.

Earle was a player with Warrington during the 1970s before moving to Blackpool Borough.

In 1982 he joined Woolston Rovers as a player and later moved on to coaching. Earle was joint-coach with Alan Dean in 1986 when Woolston Rovers were one of 10 clubs to form the first BARLA National League.
