Firwood Waterloo 2nd 18 Lymm 2nd 38

LYMM reached theBrooke Edgley STS Cup semi final with a win at Firwood Waterloo on Saturday.

Waterloo struck first, but Lymm started to put a few phases together and it was after the first real continuity of play Tom Baker made a half break and James Boden supported well to receive a pop pass and stride over from 15 metres for Tom Shard to convert.

However Lymm’s lead didn’t last long as they gave territory away by conceding penalties at the break down and allowing Waterloo to get over the gain line with missed tackles.

Waterloo capitalised on this by taking a quick tap penalty near the line to drive over for another unconverted try.

Lymm were playing in fits and starts and when they managed to retain possession and speed the game up they looked dangerous.

It was from one of these phases that Tom Baker again made the half break and good support by Andrew Kerr ended with him forcing his way over and Tom Shard converting excellently from the touch line against the wind.

The first half ended with Waterloo kicking a penalty with the last play.

The second started with Lymm having the elements behind them but they put themselves under pressure immediately when trying to move the ball wide it was intercepted.

Only good defence kept the home team out.

However Lymm settled down and started to play the game in the opposition half with some good kicking and midfield breaks by Callum Harris.

It was another multiple phase attack close to the Waterloo line that ended with Greg Robertson bursting through a gap to score a converted try.

It was all Lymm now as Waterloo tired and the powerful running of Andrew Kerr was making good metres and it was no surprise when Tom Shard ghosted in unopposed and convert his own try.

To Waterloo’s credit they kept going and even though their play was generally limited to pick and drive tactics, weak tackling allowed the Waterloo wing to chip ahead and win the race for an unconverted try.

Normal service was resumed when Callum Harris made a break and good support play and offloading ended with Jack Worton scooting in under the posts for the final converted try.

They face Sedgley Park next week.
