A PAIR of Warrington Athletics Club athletes raced into contention for the World Youth Championships and Commonwealth Youth Games this year.

Under 20s runners Carys McAulay and Harriet Knowles-Jones took bronze at the National Championships this weekend in the 800m and 3,000m respectively.

They now face a wait to see if they will be selected for the Worlds in Colombia and Commonwealth Games in Samoa.

McAulay qualified comfortably through her heat in the 800 metres on Saturday with a time of 2 minutes 10.52 seconds.

In the final on Sunday, with four other Scots in the race, she ran well but had to concede best to Molly Long (Bristol & West) and Mhairi Hendry (Victoria Park City of Glasgow) taking the bronze medal in 2 minutes 09.62 seconds.

Knowles-Jones ran well to take the bronze medal in the 3,000 metres on Sunday, also giving best to two older athletes finishing with a time of 9 minutes 39.10 seconds.

In the under 23s, James Webster finished fifth in his 400m hurdles heat and James Gladman came fifth overall in the 110m hurdles.

Webster finished his heat in 54.10 seconds but did not progress to the final.

Gladman came third in his heat in 14.45 seconds, qualifying for the final where he finished fifth with 14.59 seconds.
