ONE of Warrington Town’s FA Cup heroes is gunning for more success – this time on the golf course.
Matt Doughty, who left the Yellows last season after helping them to a club record FA Cup second round place, will play in the Lombard Trophy regional final on Friday at Dunham Forest.
Warrington-based Doughty won the club competition at Birchwood Golf Club, where he rejoined as a member last year.
The eight-handicapper, who shot a net 67 at Birchwood after only being convinced to enter the competition at the last minute, joins club professional Carl Edwards for the regional round at the Altrincham venue.
A win would see the pair book a spot at Gleneagles for the final and have a shot at the £80,000 prize fund.
“My uncle was the groundskeeper at Dunham Forest for years but I’ve never played it,” said 33-year-old Doughty, who works at Warrington Hospital in medical records.
“It’s going to be tough as there will be some playing off 19/20 and they have almost a shot on you each hole.
“It would be amazing to get to Gleneagles, but it’s going to be tough. I’m excited and looking forward to it.”
