LONGFORD’S Jesse Lingard helped England under 21s get their European Championship back on track with a late winner last night.
The Warrington-born forward scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Sweden after coming on as a substitute for Gareth Southgate’s side.
The 22-year-old, who signed a new three-year deal at Manchester United in February, started the first group game against Portugal, when England suffered a 1-0 defeat.
He was relegated to the bench on Sunday, but slammed home an 85th-minute volley after replacing Tottenham’s Alex Pritchard in the second half to send the Three Lions second in their group and boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
England’s final group game of the tournament in Olomouc, in the Czech Republic, comes against Italy on Wednesday.
