A PAIR of Warrington Rowing Club teenagers helped the club to an unprecedented two gold medals at the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham at the weekend.

Lymm High School duo Ellie Davis and Lucy Glover won the under 16s double sculls event, before Glover took gold in the singles competition.

On Saturday, the 16-year-olds teamed up at the National Watersports Centre against 40 of the best crews in Great Britain.

The girls, who won the junior 15s competition last year, battled into the semi final were they faced a strong combination from Maidenhead and four other crews.

Maidenhead managed to pip Warrington to the line, but they were later to find that their excursions would cost them dearly in the final as they could not repeat their semi-final pace.

In the final, the Warrington combination bolted into an early lead leaving Maidenhead and Avon struggling to live with their fierce pace as they claimed gold.

Glover then lined up in the singles on Sunday, easing into the semi final and then rowing an imperious race to win easily and lay down a marker for the final.

She repeated her race plan from the day before and quickly established a commanding lead that would see her win comfortably from her rivals.

It was the first time Warrington had won two gold medals at the event, in what is the most important weekend in the calendar for junior rowers racing over the full 2000m international distance.

Several other Warrington crews put in good performances to make it to the semi finals and achieve a top 12 ranking.
