HEAD coach Matt Wilson was delighted to get off the mark with Rylands Sharks' first win of the season but knows there is still work to be done.

Rylands came out on top 20-12 in a bruising North West Men's League Premier Division clash at Folly Lane at the weekend and will now spend time working on improvements in training.

Wilson said: “It was huge for us to get that monkey off our back and get that first win.

“A lot of people were beginning to doubt our decision to step up two divisions but the group of players are full of belief and sometimes you just have to roll up your sleeves and rip in.

“It was all about character at Folly Lane.

“We were a away from home, defended a huge slope and didn’t concede a point in the second half. That is more pleasing than scoring any try.

“I thought our new half-back pairing of Craig Harris and Sean Boyle really controlled the game from start to finish and our captain Matt Taylor moving into the pack really helped us go forward.

“It’s been difficult for them early this year as we have been on the back foot but they really showed what they are capable of when we set the platform in that middle unit.

“We are still pretty patchy with the ball in hand but there is still much improvement in us and we know that.

"We have three weeks off and we can finally get out on the field and work hard to put those little things right.”
