PHOENIX Fire Boxing Club were crowned 'best team' in an international competition in Ireland.

Their five participating fighters reached the finals day of the Dublin City Box Cup, with four of them coming home winners.

Impressive Casey Brown was awarded the boxer of the tournament prize from more than 100 pugilists representing over 20 clubs from across Europe, while Sam Watson, John Taylor and Ryan Lynskey were also victorious.

Brown, aged 16, faced an extremely difficult proposition in the 66kg final - a 6ft 5in southpaw.

But the quality of the talented teen's assertive boxing, countering with both head and body shots, dominated Sean McGuirk from Ireland's Whitechurch Boxing and won him a clear unanimous decision.

Brown also defeated Dublin St Saviours' Patrick Maughan on day one.

Elite welterweight Lynskey, aged 20, won a unanimous decision against Stephan Dragos of Dublin University Boxing.

Lynskey built an early lead with a tight defence combined with solid straight shots.

As Dragos took more risks to get back into the bout Lynskey scored continually to win the unanimous decision from the judges.

Taylor dominated his final day opponent Brandon Cassidy of Erne Boxing Club at 51kg level.

The 15-year-old's sustained quality attacks and movement in the first round continued and Cassidy was wisely retired by his corner at the end of the second round.

Watson, aged 15, claimed a 53kg points decision over Ross Boylan of St Saviours.

James Dunne whom, after progressing through to the final day, was unable to compete due to a damaged hand.

Phoenix Fire boxers are next in action on April 17 as the club host a boxing evening combined with a three-course carvery meal at Orford Jubilee Community Hub.
