Wigan St Cuthberts 22 Latchford 39

LATCHFORD recorded their first league victory of the season following a impressive performance at St Cuthberts.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks and raced into a 12-0 lead in the opening five minutes with tries from Martin Whitehead and Lewis Wightman,Wightman converting both.

Cuthberts hit back with a converted try but Latchford began to dominate field position and tries from Jamie Birchall, Phil Scott and a second Wightman score with two further conversions put them in control and when Connor Byron dropped a goal from 30 yards out.

Half time 29-6 to Albion.

Credit to the hosts who came out strong in the second half and quickly reduced the deficit with a converted try but some great defence kept them at bay and when Martin Whitehead raced in from dummy half the game was safe for Latchford.

Both sides swapped tries towards the end with Jamie Birchall crossing for his second of the day with Wightman’s conversion giving him a personal haul of 18 points.

Redline Recruitment man-of-the-match Andy Wood for a solid 80 minutes in the second row.

This Saturday the firsts entertain St Helens Wild Boars while for the first time in three years Latchford seconds/Legends will also play, taking on Burtonwood Bulldogs A also at Victoria Park.

The club are hoping the return of the second team will increase pressure for places and any potential players who maybe fancy the challenge of rugby league will be more than welcome.

Director of Rugby Mick Byron said: “The return of a second team shows how far the club is progressing and we are always interested in players of all abilities who wish to try their hand at a great sociable club.

“The team will be based around players pushing for first team spots whilst some of our elder players will be pulling a shirt on to offer their experience.”
