Lymm 2nd 53 Wilmslow 2nd 7

LYMM are through to the Raging Bull League Cup Final thanks to victory over Wilmslow's second XV on Saturday.

The scoreline did not reflect the effort Wilmslow put in but clinical finishing by Lymm kept the score board moving.

Jack Worton continued his good form by beating three players on a kick return and sprinting in from 40 metres to open the scoring after one minute.

Wilmslow fought back retaining possession through their forwards but when Lymm got the ball they kept it alive by moving it around using their backs and the forwards well to probe the visitors’ defence.

It was after a period of pressure that Wilmslow were penalised at the breakdown for Richie McEvoy to kick a penalty from in front of the posts.

Lymm continued to press but came up against determined Wilmslow defence and were thwarted close to the line on a number of occasions.

It was looking as if it was going to be close game when Richie McEvoy demonstrated his outstanding finishing skills with two tries in five minutes.

The first was a brilliant individual effort when he beat four players on a touchline run from 40 metres.

For the second he followed a half break by Tom Baker, who offloaded to him 30 metres out to round the full back.

He converted both tries too.

To their credit Wilmslow continued to put some moves together and attacked in the Lymm 22 but good defence held them out.

Jake Ashall, returning from a number of weeks’ unavailability, won an excellent turnover deep in the Lymm 22.

The ball was then moved through numerous hands over 80 metres for Rory Ridley-Thomas to score a converted try in the corner and make it 27-0 at half time.

It would have been easy for Lymm to ease off especially against the wind but they continued to keep the ball in hand and after another barnstorming run from Ashall, prop forward Ollie Askew was on hand to step around the full back for a try which Tom Shard converted.

Lymm kept the pressure up and were now playing with good structure, retaining possession well.

Wilmslow showed resilience but eventually the pressure told and it was from a set piece move that Dave Williamson, returning from a long injury lay-off, showed his class, timing his run to perfection to score another converted try.

Wilmslow mainly through their forwards were hanging on and were tackling well but after another flowing move the ball was sprayed wide and good support play by flanker John Long resulted in a try for him as he took an inside pass from winger Mark Wells.

It was fitting that McEvoy finished the Lymm scoring, showing his pace to round the full back to complete his hat-trick with a try that Shard converted.

Lymm will meet Wirral in the final on the first weekend in May.
