HARRIET Knowles-Jones was the top performer from Warrington Athletics Club in the first round of the British Athletics Cross Challenge on Saturday.

The challenge, which included the European Cross Country Championships, took place at Sefton Park in Liverpool and the promising Knowles-Jones ran well to finish in 10th place.

She clocked 15mins 14secs in the combined under 20s/under 17s race, which acted as the trial for Great Britain's European Championships team.

The youngster was the second under 17s runner to finish and was followed home by Katie Lowery in 30th place in 16mins 1sec, Jasmin Dobson in 109th in 18mins 3secs and Kiera Grady in 136th with 21mins 35secs.

In the under 15s race, Lauren Ferris finished 14th in 11mins 23secs and Melissa Boyer was 25th in 11mins 39secs.

Jordan Jones was the club's only runner in the under 13s boys race, enjoying 20th spot in 11mins 12secs.

In the under 15s boys, Jack Stubbings ran well to finish in 25th in 10mins 12secs, followed home by Sam Rostron in 37th and Luke Gamble in 46th with times of 10mins 23secs and 10mins 29secs respectively.

Owen Lee, in the under 17s men’s , finished 76th in 19mins 24secs and Matt Wigelsworth clocked 22mins 10secs to finished 61st in the under 20s. Tom Jarvis came 100th in the senior men's event.
