TWO Lymm High School pupils won a national rowing event on the River Thames while competing for Warrington Rowing Club.

Lucy Glover and Ellie Davies, who are Year 11 pupils at Lymm High, triumphed in rowing’s ‘Pairs Head of the River Race’ on 4500m of the River Thames from Chiswick to Hammersmith, which is the reverse course of the University Boat Race.

The pair defeated 25 other crews in the Women’s Junior 16 double sculls category to record the first victory ever for Warrington Rowing Club in this high-profile and prestigious event.

There were plenty of crews out to beat Glover and Davies after they were crowned National Schools Champions in Women’s Junior 15 double sculls earlier this year, but the pair had no intention of being overhauled.

Glover was again on form in the Nottingham Autumn Head when she was the fastest junior female sculler over the 5500m course on the River Trent.

In strong winds on an unfamiliar river, the 15-year-old demonstrated her customary determination in spite of being the youngest junior to record a faster time than her eight 17 and 18-year-old opponents.

Her time of 21:57 placed her as the second fastest female overall by just two seconds.

Glover also tasted victory at the Chester Head, having taken on and beaten her own age group competition over the 4km River Dee course in the morning.

The Lymm High pupil raced the same course in the afternoon to win the senior women’s event, going even faster on the second occasion and taking the fastest overall women junior sculler time on the day.

Glover and Davies were both among the winners again at the Northwich Head of the River race on the 2300m River Weaver course.

Davies won in the Women’s Junior 17 single sculls and Davies Glover were joined by Jenny Blythe and Izzy Oldland in winning the Women’s Junior 16 quadruple sculls.
