THREE Warrington Athletics Club teams won medals in the North of England Cross Country Relay Championships.

The under 11s girls opened the day at Graves Park in Sheffield with silver, the under 13s boys went one better with gold before a big surprise came with the achievement of second place in the senior men's race.

It is the first time in more than 20 years that a senior Warrington team has won medals in area or national championships.

In that race, Cameron Field finished seventh on the first stage, recording the 11th fastest time of the day with 10mins 42secs.

Fellow under 20s runner Liam Burthem moved the team up to fifth place with 10mins 59secs before 40-year-old former UK International Nick Jones climbed to second spot with 10mins 56secs.

Matt Wigelsworth, another under 20s athlete, duplicated Jones' time and held onto the silver medal spot behind Liverpool Harriers.

For the golden under 13s boys, Lucas Hayes ended the first leg eighth with 6mins 4secs, followed by Jordan Jones achieving the sixth fastest time in the race with 5mins 47secs as he moved up to third place.

Sam Evans then won comfortably, recording the second fastest time in the race with 5mins 27secs.

Ashley Nemits handed over a 10-second lead for the silver-medal winning under 11s girls, clocking the second fastest time of the race with 5mins 31secs.

Maya Evans extended the lead to 21 seconds with her 5mins 50secs.

The youngest member of the team, Molly Wormald, ran her heart out to clock 6 mins 9secs but was caught by a Sale Harriers runner - who recorded the fastest time of the race - in the final 400 metres.

Warrington's three successes left them joint second in the medal table with City of Sheffield and only beaten by Liverpool - both much larger clubs.

Two other Warrington teams took part but missed out on medals.

The under 15 boys finished seventh.

Luke Gamble, who has been unwell, handed over after the first stage in 12th place with 7mins 38ses to be the fastest in the team.

Sam Rostron took over for the second stage and ran to form to move the team up to seventh place, recording 7mins 41secs.

Daniel Fox contested the final stage and ran well to hold onto seventhas he recorded 7mins 48secs.

In the under 17s men’s race, Daniel Evans handed over in third place in 7mins 14secs - only two seconds behind the leader.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Association of Track Statisticians announced their ranking lists for under 17 athletes at the weekend.

These rankings are joint for both male and female and scored on the best three performances achieved during the season.

Warrington Athletics Club’s Carys McAulay scored 2,178 points to place her in 16th position.
