TONY Rough took a trip to the tiny River Alyn on Sunday and fished just below Cook's Bridge in one of the deeper pools.

He used a small loafer-style float and regularly trickled a few maggots in his swim catching small chub, dace, grayling and superbly marked brown trout steadily throughout the four-hour session.

He commented: “I really enjoyed fishing another of the club’s rivers. It is a privilege to have access to such quality waters in idyllic surroundings and right on my doorstep.”

Thanks Tony, it is such remarks that make the committee’s efforts worthwhile.

Our bailiff team at Wigan report that Woodshaw Reservoir is fishing reasonably well and a few local experts are still catching a crucians.

Plenty small Roach to maggot and pellet plus a few tench and bream. Whilst at Worthington Reservoirs anglers are having good roach catches but only a few carp.

Winner of this week’s Mersey match on Saturday was local legend Jimmy Byrnes with virtually an all perch catch, taken on pole and maggot for 4-8-0.

Not too far behind in second place was Martin Lenihan, who put a mixed catch of roach and perch on the scales for 4-1-0. With the colder water conditions bites were scarcer and the large bream were not feeding.

Weights were down again this week on our Mersey Sunday Series and all anglers struggled to catch on the tip.

Lenihan, fishing the pole on peg 65, was the top dog catching mainly roach topped up with a few small skimmers on the pole.

Ray Bowden was the bridesmaid again only missing out by just over 2ozs with a similar net of roach. Roy Everson did well with a masterful display of the bolognaise method for third with 4-8-8, but had a gruelling last hour.

It was a completely different story from last week’s struggle for bites as this week’s Disabled and Over 60s match changed its venue to Grappenhall Trees.

Keith Wernham notched up his first win of the season with 9-1-4, just holding off Lenny Dutton, who was only one tiny silver fish away from the win himself. Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips.
