TWO athletes recorded impressive times as they contested the National Road Relay Championships with Warrington Athletics Club teams.

Sam Evans excelled in an under 13s boys' side that won the silver medal, while Harriet Knowles-Jones stood out in the 12th-placed under 17s team.

Evans, running the second leg, took off in 17th place with a deficit of 62 seconds on the leaders Charnwood.

He stormed through the field to hand over to Jordan Jones in second place, recording the fastest time in the race with 13mins 1sec, which was 33 seconds faster than anyone else.

Not only that, it was the second fastest time ever achieved for the age group, coming behind Ben Dijkstra of Leicester Coritanian who has gone on to win many titles including gold in the Youth Olympic Games Triathlon in August.

Lucas Hayes had exceeded expectations in the first leg with 14mins 36secs and Jones sealed the silver when he ran two minutes faster than last year, with his 14mins 13secs.

Knowles-Jones ran the third leg from a 28th-placed start for the under 17s women, after Vicky Ramsbottom and Olivia Bush.

Ramsbottom started too fast and struggled later, finishing in 27th place in 15mins 8secs.

Bush fought hard but dropped one place with her 16mins 11secs.

Knowles-Jones then stormed through the opposition, moving the team up 16 places with her 12mins 53secs.

The Lymm runner's time, 29 seconds faster than the next best in the race, is the third fastest recorded by an under 17s woman.

One of those to have done better is Jessica Judd, who has gone on to run in the Commonwealth Games, European and World Championships and is the current world junior silver medallist at 800m.
