Wigton 25 Warrington 40

WARRINGTON recovered from a shaky start to beat Wigton in the Northern Division North One West on Saturday.

Warrington struggled to get going and fell behind early on through a penalty kick.

However, the away side battled through to half time where they found themselves 18-8 up via tries from Tom Wood and Andy Roberts and two penalties from Luke Wood.

Two more tries from Warrington early in the second half from Sean Hughes and Cam Lewis gave the away side a seemingly unassailable lead.

Wigton came back strong though and three home tries brought them to within one score of Warrington before Luke Wood converted a 30-yard penalty.

Warrington wrapped up the scoring and secured the win in the last minute through Keiron Hughes.

Warrington seconds had a much more difficult proposition when they were beaten at Blackburn in the Standish Media Services Division One.

After a close-fought first half, Warrington went in at the break 17-12 down with tries from Paul Thompson and Danny Newens.

The first period of the second half saw Blackburn’s dominance bring two unconverted tries but the visitors fought back when Martin Tierney crossed the line.

Blackburn scored again before Warrington’s Andy Almond had the last word in the 32-24 defeat.

Warrington’s third string returned to league duty with a win over New Brighton in the Freshlet Division Two South.

Tries from Ryan Carter and Mark Tickle as well as a Matt Drinkwater penalty and a Shaun McDermott drop goal secured a 16-7 victory for Warrington.
