Lymm 30
Newport 12

VICTORY in Lymm’s first ever meeting with Shropshire side Newport was founded on a great team effort.

Even more will be needed when they visit National League Three Midlands table-toppers Nuneaton on Saturday.

Lymm’s line-out play was excellent, as was their tackling – albeit mostly conducted in the Newport half.

Each time Newport fielded kicks and tried to run out from defence an impregnable line of determined tacklers was waiting.

As ever, the player setting the standard was Tim Oakes and with first XV debutants Giles Dugdale and Steve Williams in their ranks, Lymm built up a 21-0 lead.

A driving maul from a lineout resulted in a try from Oakes and Cormac Nolan added the conversion, which preceded three penalty goals.

Sion Williams crossed from another driving maul before Newport responded with a converted try shortly before the interval.

Another Nolan penalty brought a swift response from Newport with a second try and coach Chris Kinsey made a brief cameo appearannce at scrum half to steady the team.

Two more penalties from Nolan completed the kicker’s outstanding 20-point afternoon and victory for Lymm.

COMMITTED Aldwinians ran out of steam as Lymm continued their winning streak in North West Intermediate League Division One.

Lymm led 17-15 at the break and a converted try from Norman in the second half stretched the difference but a heroic 10-minute spell defending their 22-metre area was needed.

Then Sutton charged over for a converted try and Lymm dominated the remainder of the game.

Lewis and Grant scored Lymm’s first-half tries, and Jones added the afternoon’s conversions.
