WARRINGTON Town’s 4-1 win over Hednesford tonight was much harder than the scoreline suggested, manager Paul Carden says.

Yellows fell behind to Danny Glover’s early goal but eventually won through as two Sean Williams free kicks and further efforts from Devarn Green and Tony Gray stretched their unbeaten league run to six games.

Report: Yellows 4 Hednesford 1

Their victory puts them just one point behind Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders Altrincham, who were held at home by Mickleover Sports.

“There was no stand-out performer. The stand-out performance was from the team as a whole,” Carden said.

“I thought we started slow, but having said that Devarn did great to slide a ball across the box that Joe Piggott is inches away from getting to before they scored.

“Their goal was poor from us. I thought we were a couple of yards off them all over the pitch.

“We gave a sloppy free kick away, we let the man go and he’s put a good header in.

“A couple of minutes later, we were back playing as we should. You have to give the lads credit for the way they responded to the goal.

“Every aspect of the game after the first 15 minutes was what we’re about.

“The scoreline was comfortable, but we worked hard. We deserved the comfortable margin.

“We worked hard for that result and that’s what it’s going to take for the rest of the season.”

Indeed, the visitors were indebted to goalkeeper James Wren for keeping the scoreline down, especially in the opening stages of the second half when Yellows were dominant.

Carden says his side’s quick start after the break did not surprise him.

“We always had more goals in us,” he said.

“I don’t remember Tony McMillan having a save to make. He couldn’t really do anything with the goal.

“If you look at their keeper, he’s made two or three top, top saves.

“At 1-0, he’s pulled an unbelievable save off from Tony Gray.

“He played well for them, he earned his dough.”

Carden saved his final piece of praise for Williams, who took his goal tally for the season to 12 with two superb free kicks.

The Yellows boss says those kind of goals have been a long time coming but also gave a mention to defender Jack Higgins’ role in distracting the goalkeeper as he tried to organise his wall.

“Willo’s free kicks have been poor this season so far, but he’s scored two worldies tonight,” he said.

“Jack goes and stands in front of the keeper and you’re not really sure what he’s going to do!

“If he’d have put them in with his hands, he couldn’t have placed them any better.

“Hopefully now he’s found his range for the last few games.”
