WARRINGTON Town have swooped to sign experienced midfielder Steve Jennings on a permanent basis.

The former Motherwell, Coventry City and Tranmere Rovers player spent two months on loan with Yellows from Southport until marking his exit back to the Sandgrounders with the penalty strike in a 1-0 win against Buxton on January 6.

Yellows went into Tuesday night’s 2-0 home loss to Lancaster in the second round of the Integro League Cup with Jennings back in the starting team.

Having an additional body on board is timely due to the three games in four days schedule facing Paul Carden’s side from Saturday.

Yellows will head to Hednesford on Saturday and Grantham on Tuesday for league matches and will host Winsford United in a five-times rearranged Cheshire Senior Cup game on Monday.

Tranmere loanee goalkeeper Luke Pilling was one of only two players selected on Tuesday from the starting line-up that defeated Mickleover Sports three days earlier, and he was beaten twice in eight minutes in the final stages as Yellows exited the Integro League Cup.

Jack Higgins brought down Charlie Bailey just inside the box and up stepped Ryan Winder to put the visitors in front after 67 minutes.

Winder turned supplier as the visitors doubled their lead, with his corner being headed home by the unmarked Richard Mercer.

Yellows created few clear-cut chances and perhaps the closest they came was eight minutes from time when a dangerous free kick by Sean Williams was cleared away at the front post with Higgins ready to pounce.

Warrington Town: Pilling, Amaral, Cunningham, Jennings (Williams), Higgins, Banks, Shield (Kinsella), Bakare, Piggott, Milne (McDonald), Davis. Unused subs: McMillan, Carden.
