WARRINGTON Town boss Paul Carden will have a selection headache in goal when his side travel to Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders Altrincham on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Understudy Ben Ascroft deputised with aplomb in Yellows’ two FA Trophy games against Ebbsfleet United when regular stopper Tony McMillan was sidelined with a calf injury.

However, with McMillan now expected to be available for Saturday’s trip to the J Davison Stadium, Carden acknowledges he has a dilemma on his hands.

“Tony McMillan will definitely train on Thursday, so he should be fine,” he said.

“It is a headache with the goalkeepers because Ben has done so well. His performances against Ebbsfleet will have done him and his teammates the world of good.

“I’ve always known he had it in him as I worked with him from a young age at Blackburn.

“The players have now seen in two massive games that he can be thrown in and still perform.

“If they didn’t have confidence in him before, they certainly will have now.”

Town saw both their scheduled games this week postponed as their home league clash with Hednesford Town and their Cheshire Senior Cup tie at Winsford United falling victim to the weather, with the latter rearranged for Monday, kick off 7.45pm.

However, it has given them a chance to bring a number of players closer to fitness.

As well as McMillan, full-back Adam Carden (ankle) and striker Tony Gray (back) look set to feature on Saturday after recovering from knocks.

However, on-loan winger Devarn Green (hamstring) will miss out.

Yellows, sitting fifth, trail Saturday’s hosts by 12 points having played three games fewer and Carden is calling on his side to “derail” the Robins’ promotion charge.

“They watched us against Ebbsfleet and I’m pretty certain they will have worked on different things to what we have seen from them,” he said.

“As we know, any game against Altrincham is a tough one, but if we can apply ourselves like we have done, it will be tough for them.

“I want to see a good, strong game between two teams trying to do things the right way.

“They have been flying in the league, but it’s up to us to try and, derail them a little bit and get our own momentum in the league going.”
