PAUL Carden expects his Warrington Town side to maintain their FA Trophy form when they return to league action against Hednesford Town today, kick off 3pm.

Yellows welcome the Pitmen to Cantilever Park high on confidence after dumping National League side Ebbsfleet United out of non-league’s most prestigious knockout competition.

Despite their cup form taking them out of league action on Saturday, none of Warrington’s rivals managed to take advantage and they remain third in the Evo-Stik Premier Division table.

Carden insists the league is still their top priority and that his players’ focus should not be on a trip to Wealdstone on February 3 in the next round of the FA Trophy just yet.

“Confidence is high and we’ve got to maintain it,” he told the Guardian.

“We need to take this into the league. Wealdstone is a few weeks away yet and we’ve got some good league games coming up.

“There’s no point in just keeping an eye out for how we go on in the Trophy. We want to be winning promotion.

“We’ve shown over two games against a side that is challenging for promotion two leagues up that we’re capable of it when we believe in ourselves.

“When we have that desire to go and do something, we do it.”

Town stunned Ebbsfleet, 39 places above them in the footballing pyramid, with a 2-0 win in Tuesday night’s replay at Cantilever Park after an injury-time equaliser denied them victory in the initial tie in Kent on Saturday, with the game finished 1-1.

However, the last time Yellows returned to league action after winning a midweek FA Trophy replay, they produced a lacklustre performance and slipped to a 3-1 home defeat to Coalville Town on the Saturday before Christmas.

Carden says he has reminded his players of that and is anxious to avoid a repeat.

“It’ll be another tough game, but we’ve got to have the same mentality and mindset in our approach to every game now,” he said.

“We don’t want a performance similar to the one against Coalville a few weeks ago.

“Hopefully, the lads’ outlook won’t change and the confidence we have picked up from these past two performances takes us on again against Hednesford.

“They’ve been doing well in the league themselves, but it’s vital that we pick up three points and we’ll be going for the win.”

Warrington are also in action on Monday when they travel to Winsford United in the Cheshire FA Senior Cup, kick-off 7.45pm.
