Witton Albion 1 Warrington Town 2

SUBSTITUTE Tony Gray struck twice, including an added-time winner, as Yellows produced a late comeback to beat neighbours Witton Albion.

Yellows trailed at the break through Will Jones’ goal just after the half-hour mark as they struggled to get going in the first half.

However, Gray struck twice after the interval to ensure Paul Carden’s side stopped themselves slipping to a third straight league defeat.

The hosts started positively as they showed plenty of ambition going forward, with Owen Dale causing Town right-back Adam Carden plenty of problems.

It was he who had the clearest chance of the half, but he could not keep his header down after a nice cross was stood up to the far post.

Warrington were reduced to a couple of counter-attacking opportunities, but they could never find the right ball as lone striker Jamie McDonald cut an isolated figure.

Their best opening came when former Witton man Scott Bakkor crossed from the right, but Dylan Vassallo just failed to get on the end of it.

In the end, it was a defensive error that led to the opening goal as Jack Higgins’ failed clearance let Rob Hopley in on goal.

Higgins did well to get back and block the home skipper’s shot, but the loose ball fell nicely for Jones and his effort squeezed over the line despite the best efforts of Tony McMillan.

After a change of system at half-time which saw Gray come off the bench, Yellows were much-improved.

Rory McKeown’s long throw caused chaos in the Witton area but the hosts somehow cleared, before Calvin Hare was forced to save Will Hayhurst’s deflected free-kick.

Despite their dominance of possession and territory, Town struggled to test Hare in the Albion goal as time ticked down.

They forced numerous set-pieces, but Witton held firm as Liam Goulding’s blocked shot epitomised their defensive resolve.

However, they were finally worn down when Jay McCarten, still up from a long throw, flicked Hayhurst’s delivery into the path of Gray, who controlled well before slamming past Hare.

Gray then tried an overhead kick from another McKeown throw, but Hare was able to pluck it out of the air.

Then, with time running out, McCarten’s shot went across goal and Gray was there to poke home a winner to send Yellows home with the points.
