PAUL Carden says Warrington Town’s 2-1 victory over Sutton Coldfield Town “was so easy it became hard.”

Goals from debutant Steve Jennings and Rory McKeown were enough for Yellows to move up to second in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, one point behind leaders Altrincham.

However, Carden says his side should have made things easier for themselves by taking more of the chances they created.

“It was one of those games that is so easy it becomes hard,” he said.

“We shouldn’t be making as hard work of it as we did. We should have been out of sight in the first half.

“I kept hearing their bench shouting ‘stay in the game’ but they weren’t staying in the game, we were keeping them in it by missing chances.

“Sometimes, it comes back to bite you on the backside but thankfully it didn’t today and we had enough to see the win out.”

Jennings, signed on loan from National League North side Southport yesterday, got his Warrington career off to the perfect start by opening the scoring less than a minute into his debut.

The goal capped a composed performance from the midfielder, which was the least Carden was expecting.

“He’s played a lot higher and captained big clubs at League One level. His experience is going to be massive for us,” he said.

“An opportunity to sign someone like him doesn’t come around twice, so it was important we brought him in.

“It gives us an extra body in midfield, but he also gives us a presence in the dressing room as well.”

Yellows operated in a 4-4-2 formation at Cantilever Park, with strikers Tony Gray and Jamie McDonald starting together in attack for the first time.

Despite admitting McDonald, who was guilty of squandering several chances, didn’t have his best game, Carden believes their partnership showed promising early signs.

“It worked really well, especially in the first half, as they are both clever players,” he said.

“I don’t think it was one of Jamie’s better games, he’s had chances he didn’t take which he normally does.

“The fitness of Tony will come and the more they play together, the more their understanding will develop.

“We’ve just seen glimpses of what it can be with those two.”
