PAUL Carden says his Warrington Town side were “too nice” as they bowed out of the FA Cup at Hyde United.

The hosts were on target either side of half time through Karl Jones and a Jay McCarten own goal in the second qualifying round replay at Ewen Fields.

After the game, Carden said the defeat to the Evo-Stik First Division North outfit was the first time this campaign where his side did not look like scoring.

He also expressed his sympathy for skipper McCarten, who also saw Jones’ first goal deflect off him on its way past Tony McMillan.

“I thought we had good control of the game for long spells, but what matters most is the work we do in both boxes,” he said.

“What happens between the boxes is irrelevant, it’s what happens inside the boxes that matters and unfortunately tonight, we didn’t do what Hyde did.

“They were resolute, they rode their luck a couple of times but when you’re a unit and you work hard for each other, that happens.

“We started the game well and had long spells of control but we’ve tried to be too nice. Not being ruthless enough has cost us the game.

“I felt sorry for Jay McCarten tonight as I thought he was immense. The first goal deflects off him as he’s the first one to try and block it with a bit of intent.

“The lad’s danced through two or three of our players who have dipped their toe in and not committed to a proper challenge.

“I said at half-time that we had to have more control in both boxes but five minutes in, Rory McKeown doesn’t do enough to stop the cross, Jay is in the right position but the ball has zipped up, come off him and gone in.

“We could have still been playing now and we wouldn’t have scored. It’s the first time we haven’t looked like scoring a goal.”
