PAUL Carden has called on his Warrington Town side to show more “grit and determination” in their Bank Holiday double-header.

Yellows welcome Matlock Town to Cantilever Park on Saturday before making the short trip to Marine on Monday.

Carden’s men go into a busy weekend on the back of a mixed week, with Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Ashton United putting a dampener on Saturday’s 3-0 win at Coalville Town.

The Yellows’ boss has urged his squad to put their first defeat of the Evo-Stik Premier Division season behind them quickly.

“We can’t do anything about the game we’ve just played, we have to focus on the one ahead,” he said.

“We’ve got a big weekend. Everybody will be wanting the same thing but we’ve got to show a lot more than we did on Tuesday, both individually and collectively.

“We’ve got to be better. It’s not just about playing football but about wanting it more and showing that grit and determination you need at this level.

“We had a big training session on Thursday and roll into the weekend.”

Warrington had led the table after Saturday’s victory, but their defeat on Tuesday means they go into the weekend in seventh place.

It came after Sean Williams, Tony Gray and Josh Hine hit the target in the second half at Coalville.

“We thought we could take the second 45 minutes at Coalville into the Ashton game, but we didn’t do it for whatever reason,” he said.

“You have those games where you can’t put your finger on why we don’t perform well.

“We didn’t force the issue enough to stretch them but defensively, we were never really stretched.”

Sean Williams (foot) and fellow midfielder Liam Hynes (knee) missed the Ashton game through injury, forcing Carden to shuffle his pack.

The Yellows boss hopes the former will be fit to play some part over the weekend, but Hynes’ prognosis will depend on the results of a scan.

Gerard Kinsella, who has not played since Boxing Day due to a serious back injury, was named on the bench against Ashton and looks set to feature for the club’s reserves next week.

“Liam Hynes has gone for a scan. He’s in a bit of pain but he’s moving and up on his feet so hopefully it won’t be as bad as first feared,” Carden said.

“Willo has had a foot problem for a few months.

“He had an injection in it on Monday but it was still to tender for him to play on Tuesday. He’ll be back for the weekend.”

“Being on the bench has given Kinny a bit of a boost. He’ll train with us on Thursday and Saturday with a view to him playing in the reserves next week.

“He’s fit to go, but he’s not had many games so we’ll try and get him as many as we can.”
