WARRINGTON Town are trying to secure contracts for their promising young talent as Football League clubs eye up potential moves.

The likes of Dylan Vassallo and Josh Askew have been attracting attention following impressive performances for Yellows in the second half of the 2016-17 season.

Having recently been for a trial at Premier League side Burnley, midfielder Vassallo has also been training with League One side Charlton Athletic.

Left-back Askew, who arrived at Cantilever Park initially on loan from Blackburn Rovers, has been looked at by Chesterfield and is also interesting Rotherham United and Bristol Rovers.

As well as keeping hold of players, Yellows chairman Toby Macormac says he hopes to make a “competitive” budget available for manager Paul Carden to recruit new talent.

“We’re trying to get Dylan on a contract. We’ll be talking to his agent in the coming days,” he said.

“It’s the same with Josh. He’s going into a few clubs but we want him to stick around.

“We want to have a budget in line with that of a competitive play-off team. After that, it’s a case of seeing whether you sink or swim.”

Warrington finished 10th in their first ever season in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, seven points shy of a play-off place.

There will be new local competition next season in the shape of Witton Albion, Stalybridge Celtic and Altrincham and Macormac is looking forward to seeing Yellows test themselves.

“There will be some interesting games next year for sure,” he said.

“We’re looking to get the Witton games on bank holidays, probably Boxing Day and Easter Monday. Depending on form, they could pull in big crowds.

“Shaw Lane will have a big budget next year and Altrincham will have a real go at getting straight back up, so there is a lot of competition if we want to do well.”

Meanwhile, two more of the 2015-16 promotion-winning squad have left Cantilever Park.

Midfielder Danny Ventre and striker Steven Gillespie have both moved on following the end of their contracts.

This means defender Jay McCarten and midfielder Gerard Kinsella are the only remaining members of the squad that won the Evo-Stik First Division North title in record-breaking style a little over a year ago.

Macormac confirmed the rest of the squad had been invited back to the club for next season, which begins in August.
