WARRINGTON Town are not getting ahead of themselves in the race to finish in the play-offs, goalkeeper Tony McMillan says.

Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to top-five rivals Spennymoor Town dropped them out of the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-off places on goal difference as Yellows failed to build on last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hednesford Town.

With five games of the season remaining, McMillan has called on his teammates to remain focused.

“We’ve got to take each game as it comes,” he says ahead of today's trip to Barwell.

“Teams around us have dropped points lately but that sort of thing can be swings and roundabouts, we might drop more points somewhere down the line.

“All we can do is keep working hard, keep battling and you never know where we might end up.”

Since joining the club in November, the 34-year-old custodian has played a key role in stabilising the defence at Cantilever Park.

Yellows conceded just three goals in their six league games in March and McMillan helped that statistic by saving a penalty in the 88th minute of last Saturday’s victory.

“To be fair, I did quite well to keep hold of it because he did hit it really well,” he said of his heroic stop.

“It’s not just me that keeps the clean sheet, it’s the guys in front of me in defence.

“It always helps having a settled defence, Jay McCarten and Evan Gumbs have been different class. They get up and win their headers and they are good with the ball as well.

“We’ve got a young squad but we’ve picked up experience throughout the season and it will only serve us well.”
