Workington 3 Warrington Town 1

THREE second-half goals ensured Warrington Town slipped to back-to-back defeats in the Evo-Stik Premier Division to further hinder their play-off hopes.

Yellows boss Paul Carden, who gave a debut to new loan signing Connor McCarthy, saw his side fall behind shortly after the break when Dave Symington converted a penalty.

Connor Tinnion then scored twice to wrap up the points, making Dylan Vassallo’s late consolation immaterial.

Carden saw his side arguably have the better of the first half as they started brightly, with Scott Harries and McCarthy both drawing saves from home stopper Aaran Taylor.

However, they could not make the most of their good spell and fell behind seven minutes after the break when, after Scott Allison had been felled in the box, Symington scored his second penalty against Town this season.

Tinnion then took over and doubled the lead midway through the second half when he cut inside from the left and curled a wonderful finish past Tony McMillan in the visiting goal.

The Yellows stopper was on the end of another superb strike from Tinnion with 10 minutes left as he struck with a brilliant free-kick to make the game safe.

Yellows did have the last laugh when Vassallo reduced the arrears with a header at the far post, but it was merely a consolation goal as the gap between Carden’s side and the play-off places grew to 10 points.

On the positive side for Carden, he saw welcome returns from injury for midfielder Sean Williams and striker Danny Hattersley.

They now turn their attention to the Cheshire Senior Cup quarter finals and a trip to Witton Albion on Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm.
